In 2001, which his English degree from the Virginia Military Institute tucked firmly in hand, Shane Finley took a job as a "cellar rat" at Copain Winery. Um, did we miss a turn somewhere? Maybe, but obviously, Shane didn't.
From Copain, he went to Australia, the Rhone valley, and back to California all within two years. With no formal training, but a keen sense of winemaking, he landed a job as an assistant winemaker with Paul Hobbs, one of the most revered winemakers in the world. Hobbs has created legendary wines in North and South America. Working with him is every winemaker's dream.
Shane's experience is almost otherworldly, which explains the wines he crafts. It may also explain the names he gives them like our Constant Disruptions, as well as his other favorites, Investigator, Delinquent, and Infraction. He was even born with a sense of humor.
Shane's operation is in Sonoma, but the grapes for our selection came from the Napa Valley. Though exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma, Napa still has the edge, ergo Shane's designation for this wine, Antihero.
In typical Finley Fashion, he lists the quantity made as 20 barrels, which consists of around 500 cases for those of us who measure such things. We couldn't wait to offer it. The dense color signals the forceful flavors which unfold in the nose and on the palate. While expecting weight, you are surprised by the silky body and uninterrupted flow of fruit and flavor. Sitting beside a lamb tenderloin could be considered, well, heroic.
