Matt and Ryan are the partners who crafted Protege. They both grew up in one of the most revered families in wine. However, they wanted to establish themselves, on their own, without using the name that everybody in the wine business recognized. That name is Wagner and the winery is Caymus.
The Wagner family came to the Napa Valley in the 1850s, just a few years after California became a state. They recognized the potential for growing grapes and so that's what they did, quite successfully. Every generation afterward kept the wine interest flowing, but it wasn't until some 50 years ago when the Wagner Family founded Caymus Vineyards that they became one of the royal families of Napa.
Growing up in that environment means you are born with wine in your blood. Of course, even if you don't use your name to get attention in the media, the best grape growers know who you are and where you come from, so these guys still had a leg up on where to go to get the best grapes for their new project.
Syrah makes up 60% of the blend with the rest being equal parts of Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It's no surprise that Caymus was the first to plant Syrah in California. This blend is a vibrant mass of richly textured black fruit and spice, culminating in a powerful finish. From carnitas to oxtails, this wine sails with the best.
