We are extremely excited to present this wine to our members. It is crafted by one of the few wine families we could safely call royalty, the Trefethens. The name comes from the original owners of the property, Eshcol, who planted the vineyard in 1886. It was purchased in 1968 by Eugene and Catherine Trefethen who immediately instituted sustainability methods, which were unheard of at the time.
John and Janet Trefethen have been at the helm for the last 50 years and are now assisted by their son and daughter, Lorenzo and Hailey. They became one of the first estate grown wineries in California. Their 400 acres of vineyards in the Oak Knoll District of Southern Napa is one of the oldest and most respected in the state. We have been fans ever since their first vintage. Their wines have always had amazing structure and lasted for decades, even the whites. When the trend began of making big flashy wines in the 1980s and became the rage, the Trefethen's stuck to their guns, realizing that they were on the right track. History has proved them right.
Our selection is nothing short of perfection. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot, with miniscule amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. You are at once struck by the heady aromas black truffle, cassis, and plum, which follow through on the palate to a grand and glorious finish. The use of French and American oak rounds out the edges and serves up a classic to match with grilled rack of lamb or wild boar sausages.
