California Icons is a passion project of location-based wines that focus on local icons as the inspiration for, and centerpiece of, each label. Winemaker Ian McCaffrey's began his career at UC Davis, just across the causeway from Tower Bridge (one of the California Icons' labels). Station 26, the label for this red blend, features a lifeguard tower in Santa Monica. This icon holds sentimental value for McCaffrey, as it was the site of his first date with his girlfriend. Station 26 will always symbolize summer, sunsets, and relaxing with friends on the sand.
This wine is a blend of Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, all grown in Oak Knoll District in Napa Valley. The vineyard is Napa Green Certified for sustainable practices that reduce runoff, conserve water, and restore riparian habitat.
Station 26 is a fresh blend that opens with aromatics achieved only through extensive and refined oak aging. The Merlot is clean and bright with spicy fruit on the palate, developing into a rich, weighty mid-palate of cranberry provided by Malbec, and culminates in an assertive, velvety, and structured finish with lingering fruit-leather and preserves courtesy of Petit Verdot.
Pair this wine with some crowd-pleasing classics, like a juicy hamburger or a Margherita pizza. This wine will also pair well with grilled pork sausages or pan-fried duck breast. Pair with some fresh blanched fava beans in olive oil and salt alongside dry sausages as an aperitif.
