Route Stock refers to Route 29, the famous road that runs along Napa's most heralded vineyards from Yountville to Calistoga. The wine is the creation of Wilson Daniels, one of the most potent wine importers in the world. The company was founded in 1978 with the mission to represent only the best of the best in the world.
That's a pretty lofty goal, and certainly not an easy one. However, here we are, over 40 years later, and they still do represent some of the most exceptional wines in the world. With their success in representing incredible wines from France, Italy, New Zealand, and Hungary, they turned their sites to representing wines from Napa and Sonoma. Those connections introduced them to some of the finest vineyards and winemakers, and as a result, they decided to craft their own wine, Route Stock.
They hired Vance Rose as their winemaker, who was interested in wine since a teenager in Austin, Texas, and went on to become an executive chef and a heralded winemaker. Most winemakers are pretty good chefs because it is the art of blending wines, like ingredients, that is most important.
In this case, Vance took grapes from classic vineyards in Yountville, Stag's Leap, St. Helena and Rutherford. This complex blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, and Merlot. It represents the pure embodiment of Napa Valley with its glossy, dense black fruit and vanilla spice to hold together a venison loin sprinkled with dried cranberries and a sage cream sauce.
