For Calmere it all began in 1983 when Tony and Herta Peju purchased 30 acres of land in Rutherford, Napa Valley's premier appellation. Their past experience owning nurseries gave them all that they needed to plant their dream vineyard. For ten years, they grew grapes and sold them to eager wineries before converting their garage to a winery, and Peju Province Winery was born.
How does this tie into Calmere? It is run by their two daughters Lisa and Ariana, who grew up in the wine business and took to it as fervently as their parents. They acquired a vineyard in 2016 and finished the Calmere winery in 2019. The name means "calm sea" in French.
Wine of the Month Club has a warm history with Peju as we've featured their wines when we could. They became so popular, unfortunately for us, that we couldn't afford them any longer. Still, now with our Napa Club, we can and are proud to do so. We almost feel like part of the family ourselves.
Calmere is in the coolest appellation in Napa, Carneros, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the stars. Our selection is a perfect example. It actually has a calmness on the palate where no feature takes center stage. The apple and pear notes mingle seamlessly with the citrus and light oak treatment. To present an impeccable offering to beautifully blend with lobster thermidor, shrimp Tom Yum soup, or Peking Duck.
