Carpe Diem has so many exalted names attached to it, it's almost difficult to know where to start. First, it is the property of Maisons Marques and Domaines which owns the Louis Roederer Champagne house along with Chateau Pichon Comtesse and Chateau de Pez in Bordeaux and Scharffenberger, Merry Edwards Winery and Diamond Creek Vineyards in California. The wine was vinified under the strict supervision of Christian Moueix, owner of Chateau Petrus. In other words, royalty.

Obviously, the expectations with this kind of background are more than enormous. Fortunately, the people at Maisons know this and know that they must live up to those expectations. We were not disappointed.

This selection sets a new parameter for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. While it has the forward lusciousness of Napa fruit and all the presence of a Napa finish, there is an engaging almost sensual aura in every aroma and every turn on the palate. The true beauty here is that it evolves and changes with each scent and each taste making you yearn for more.

At first you are struck by the rich earthiness that can only spell Napa. This evolves into dense berry, dark chocolate, and saddle leather. Eventually, the berries evolve just in time for the soft, but persistent tannins to wrap the entire experience in a delicious whirl.

This complicated offering can best be appreciated with equally complex food like a prime, aged New York steak delicately scented with black truffles and a swash of foie gras.
