Native Son is crafted by Kuleto Estates. Pat Kuleto is a superstar in San Francisco. He opened his restaurant, Kuleto's, there in 1986 and it became almost an overnight sensation, hitting nearly every "best restaurants" list in the country.
In 1992 he turned his sights to Napa, purchasing 761 acres on its Eastern border. The following year, he began planting Cabernet, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and soon afterward Syrah and Zinfandel.
Pat was smart enough to know that he was a restaurateur, not a winemaker. So he hired winemaking wizard John Clews to manage the winery and the vineyard's complex patchwork of over 100 separate blocks of vines. It's dizzying just to think about - which, thankfully, I really don't do too often.
As with his restaurant, it wasn't long before Pat became a superstar in the wine biz. His wines have been sought-after almost since the beginning. Having a name like Pat Kuleto certainly didn't hurt either.
Pat sold his winery to another titan in the wine biz, Bill Foley, in 2009. And he sold his restaurant just last year - after 30 years. It was a bittersweet time for the staff, the suppliers and of course for his loyal and devoted clientele, including me.
Fortunately, the wine lives on. Our selection is a blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet with small amounts of Sangiovese and Syrah. It presents an amalgam of strawberry, licorice, earth and spice in an endless swirl of flavor.
