Alta was founded by Fred and Nina Oliai in Napa Valley's Atlas Peak district in 2008, a mere 1,700 feet above sea level. Unbeknownst to them, their next-door neighbor was John Konsgaard, considered one of the best winemakers in California.
Though Fred was very familiar with fermentation, having worked in Kentucky distilleries as well as having received a Masters in molecular biology, working in real-time with one of the best in the business - Kongsgaard Wine - was absolutely invaluable to his education.
It's no secret that most of the best vineyards in the world are on mountains. Fred Oliai further stacks the deck by pruning vigorously, assuring that each vine produces a minimal number of clusters, with each one of those clusters packed with flavor.
Alta is widely known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, but it's their Sauvignon Blanc that has recently been turning heads. The grapes are organically farmed by none other than Heitz Vineyards, one of the first wineries to present vineyard-specific wines in the 1960s. Heitz, in the Yountville District of Napa, is still considered one of the best Cabernet producers in the world.
The same conditions that make Napa Valley's Cabernets legendary also work for Cabernet's white grape counterpart, Sauvignon Blanc. Here is stone fruit, soil-driven spice and nuance that is dizzying, dazzling, delicious and not to be missed!
