When Tony and Herta Peju purchased 30 acres of land in Napa's Rutherford district nearly 40 years ago, they knew they had something special. Tony grew up in Eastern Europe and had travelled extensively with his family. Herta was born in Austria, but grew up in Venezuela. They met and married in Los Angeles and founded a commercial nursery.
Grapes weren't part of the plan, but it became an interest and then a passion. Tony enrolled in the enology program at UC Davis and upon completion traversed California until he came to Napa. That was the end of that journey and the beginning of another.
They slowly and laboriously planted grapes and began to sell them to local wineries. It wasn't until nearly 10 years later that they decided to build their own winery and Peju Winery was born.
The winery is run by Tony and Herta along with their two daughters, Lisa and Ariana, completing a family project that took as much patience as it did skill. Peju was already well-known, as the grapes were sold to wineries that kept getting awards and high praise. It was just a matter of time before those accolades would come to them.
This Sauvignon Blanc has received very high ratings from the press and is considered one of the top wines in Napa. The complex amalgam of white peach, guava and melon is juxtaposed against a tart citrus backdrop to launch into oysters on the half shell or shrimp cocktail.
