Once again, we can showcase a fabulous wine from one our favorite wineries, Whitehall Lane. It was founded by Alan Stein, a Palos Verdes surgeon and great customer of Paul, Sr.'s wine shop, Palos Verdes Wines and Spirits. For over 20 years Alan made some of the best wine in Napa and always at prices below the market. The Wine of the Month Club has, and always will be proud to feature them.
When Alan decided it was time to retire, he sold Whitehall Lane to Tom Leonardini, who was an inveterate wine lover. But he was also a lover of Merlot from the Morisoli Vineyard, which had an exclusive contract with Whitehall Lane. The lure of making wine from Morisoli was too great for Tom to pass up. Tom and his family continue to run Whitehall Lane with the same commitment and dedication of its founder. They were fortunate to inherit winemaker Ray Coursen and keep him there for another 10 years, making the same incredible wines. Nobody is as familiar with the Morisoli Vineyard as Coursen.
That, of course, is the key element in our selection. Winemaker Jason Moulton learned from Coursen how to deal with the grapes, and he's done an impressive job. The blend is primarily Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with touches of Syrah and Zinfandel. The result is tight-fisted offering sporting blackberry jam, earth, strawberry, and rhubarb with a stunning, extracted finish. It's almost too much for one glass, but could work with lamb burgers seasoned with garlic and mint.
