Like most winemakers, Philippe Langner loves to experiment. He is fascinated by nature and, just to top it off, wanderlust is part of the equation as well. Philippe was born in Aix-en-Proivence on the French coast of the Mediterranean. Wine has been a staple here since before the Roman Empire, so it was only natural that he would take it up as an interest. But, what is little known about this area is that it is also where the finest produce in France is farmed. This actually interested him as much as the wine.

Then he committed an act that most French would think was treason. He studied agriculture and viticulture at UC Davis. "Mon Dieu," they exclaimed. How could he go anywhere else but France? Except Phillipe knew the French ways and he wanted to know the ways of other countries.

Upon completing his degree, he went back to France to work at Chateau Clark, a property owned by the Rothschilds. There he worked with Michel Rolland, one of the most famous winemakers in Bordeaux.

Obviously, California had made an impression because he came back here to work for Sullivan winery until branching out on his own with Ferox, which is named after a romantic villa in Aix. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is from prime Alexander Valley vineyards and spent 30 months in French oak. The result is an amazing amalgam of sweet cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla spice. The chateaubriand awaits!
