Roth Estate is a premium wine producer specializing in Bordeaux varietals located in the upper reaches of Sonoma's Russian River. It is owned by our other Cabernet producer in this series, Bill Foley.

Roth owns vineyards in the two most prestigious appellations in Sonoma, the Russian River and Alexander Valley. The latter is the warmest area in the valley and thus, the best place for the Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon.

Alexander Valley is named after Cyrus Alexander who was contracted to manage a huge ranch. In exchange for his services, Cyrus was given 9,000 acres. For the next 30 years he constructed a tannery, a grain mill, orchard and vineyard. The richness of the soil attracted other farmers and the natural beauty of the area attracted sightseers, settlers and small industries.

It became rather obvious, over the course of these decades, that wine grapes were the best crop for Alexander Valley and it wasn't long before most of the orchards and multi-use agriculture disappeared and the focus was all on wine.

We were a bit surprised that a Sonoma Cabernet could be this bold. But, our selection can only be described as all Alexander Valley. From the deep, dense, brooding color to the lush, sensuous fruit powered by the exacting tannins and commanding finish, here is a wine for the ages.

From a peppercorn steak with caramelized onions and wild mushrooms to sharp cheeses and sourdough bread, this wine pleases in all phases. In other words, about as good as it gets.
