Chinese industrialist, Eric Yuan, founded Acumen vineyards and winery in 2012 on Napa's most eastern and highest location, Atlas Peak. It is a completely organic and total sustainable wonder. Oddly enough, there is another Eric Yuan who developed the highly popular Zoom application, but there's no relation, except maybe the entrepreneur spirit.

Atlas Peak can only be described as treacherous in terms of growing grapes. There is very little soil, mostly rock, shale and granite. It is extremely difficult to farm, but they still do because the grapes love it and happy grapes make happy wine. It's our new mantra.

They sell off most of their grapes to eager winemakers willing to pay more so they don't have to deal with growing them. This is a blessing to winemaker, Henrik Poulsen, because now he gets the best of the best to choose from.

As a result, the wines can only be described as stunning. This is due to the rocky soil, but also to the low yields. Acumen's vineyard typically produces roughly one third less wine than the average Napa yields. It's the old adage "less is more."

That is certainly the case here. The roots of the vines bring up many different nutrients to the grapes, resulting in many complex flavors like grapefruit, mandarin orange, pineapple and slate. Matching food is a dream with this wine, as swordfish with sun-dried tomatoes, shrimp cocktail or smoked salmon could each or all fit into the mix.
