Once again, we feature The Dude from Canepa Koch Wine Cellars run by Mark Canepa and Neil Koch. It has become almost a staple here as every year they seem to outdo themselves with this selection. Previously, Mark worked for premiere Napa barrel producer Seguin Moreau and Neil worked for none less than Seavey, Bryant, Lewis Cellars and Vineyard 29. That's pretty much all you need on a resume to get a positive reaction.
What they have learned is that the price is very important, especially when compared to the quality of the wine. These guys are not dot com millionaires or hedge fund funny men. They need to sell their wines in order to make a living. Pricing the wine at half to two-thirds of the competition is one way. It's really the only way. They have very little overhead so they can afford to sell a wine of this quality at an amazing price and still make a living. The best part is that they hit the mark every year.
This year may be the best yet. For one thing, 2019 was a picture perfect year. That makes it a lot easier to make great wine. To achieve that perfection, they chose grapes from several different appellations within Napa. Our gem is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 12% Merlot, and 5% each of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The blend presents an explosion of ripe fruit and tannins with berry, plum and cherry dancing all over the palate, waiting for a prime skirt steak with caramelized onions and a splash of Cognac.
