Poiema is the Greek word for "poem" and reflects the philosophy of winemaker Philippe Langer's belief that fine wine is poetic. It is easy to believe when you consider that Langer came from France, where food and wine can appear poetic. Langer settled in Atlas Peak, one of the highest elevations in Napa. As cool as it is, he realized that an even cooler place, like Sonoma, is where he wanted to look for grapes. He received no hinderance from Anthony Hsu, owner of Maxville Winery, which created out selection.

It was Anthony's vision to reflect the winery's deep connection to California's early history. His passion for cooking and sharing his preparations with guests is reflected in the winery's hospitality. Anthony's love of ethnic foods (he is fluent in three languages and two regional dialects of Chinese) brings a distinct flair to Maxville's food and wine pairings. The international aspects of Maxwell is rather fascinating. Here you have a Chinese owner with a French winemaker for his Chardonnay and a Swiss winemaker for his wines from Napa. That would be Jean Hoefliger, born and raised in Switzerland. His fascination for winemaking led him to forego a career in international finance and pursue his passion. Determined to learn winemaking from the best, he moved to Bordeaux, France, and then to South Africa to further his training.

Our selection boasts all the green apple, ripe pear and buttery notes we would expect. Shrimp scampi made with a martini blend of gin and Vermouth would be just the ticket.
