Chateau de la Terriere was founded in the 19th Century by Jules du Souzy. He was a very respected winemaker and aristocrat whose wines were considered one of the finest in the area. That area is actually in the Cru village of Brouilly in Beaujolais. It is considered part of the Burgundy region but is its own appellation growing Gamay Noir.

La Terriere, now owned by the 3rd generation of the Bouchacourt family, also produces wine from vineyards just outside the Beaujolais appellation in Burgundy. These are some of the best values to be found, as prices for top Burgundies can easily match those for some automobiles.

This is southern Burgundy so it is slightly warmer and the wines slightly riper. That suits us just fine. Pinot Noir here is more temperamental than in most climates because the climate itself is quite temperamental. Frost when you don't want it, heat when you don't want it and rain when you don't want it keeps vineyard managers working, sometimes through the night to protect their delicate produce.

But, the rewards are worth the effort when the results are a beauty like this. It shows off all the potential that the grape and the soil have produced in harmony with each other. Lovely hints of cotton candy and Bing cherry waft into the air and captured in the mouth along with the spice and vanilla that make these wines so inviting.
