Martin Ray Winery is situated in the geographic center of the Russian River Valley appellation. The area's climate - the coolest in Sonoma County - is ideal for producing grapes that are intense and fruit-forward, with crispness and acidity as well as excellent balance and length. Additionally, the vineyard sits on what is known as "Goldridge soil," composed of sandy, loamy, ancient seabed that's the perfect environment for grapevines. This is one of the finest places on Earth to grow Pinot Noir. The winery's ideology of making "wines of place" could not have found a better spot.
Martin Ray's head winemaker, Lindsey Haughton says, "I hear the term rockstar winemaker, I'd say we'd be more comfortable to fall into the roadie category. We take great pride in what we do backstage. We're satisfied to work until we drop so the wines can be the rockstar." This commitment to hard work and putting the wine first is clearly evident here, in their debut vintage of Synthesis Estate-grown Pinot Noir.
Our selection is a lovingly crafted blend of three different Pinot Noir clones, each adding its own assets to the whole. During the winemaking process, each clone was layered into the fermentation vat separately, to fully integrate each clone's character.
The result is a spectacular wine. Aromas of rose petals, tart raspberry, ripe cherry and cedar introduce the strong, fruit-driven core. Red currant, strawberry, lemon and a light minerality play on your palate, extended and rounded out by supple and engaging tannins. Absolutely beautiful.
