You couldn't meet a more likable guy than Walt Babcock. He was a Renaissance Man is the classiest sense of the term. He had a successful dental practice, restaurant, and commercial fishing company.

So, when he purchased a piece of property in Santa Barbara County, someone suggested he plant wine grapes. It sounded like a natural extension of his other successful operations. When he planted his vineyard, it took a few years for grapes to finally be harvested. He sold them to budding new winemakers in the up and coming Santa Ynez Valley appellation, which later became Sta. Rita Hills.

His son, Bryan, who was studying to be a doctor at Occidental College, became so interested in wine, that he switched to UC Davis to study enology. They planted several varieties, which all ripened at different times. So that the little winery they constructed wouldn't be over extended. But Mother Nature pulled a curve in 1984, and all the grapes ripened at the same time.

Bryan left UC Davis and headed to the winery to make his first vintage and never looked back. Meanwhile, Walt planted a vegetable farm that was so successful he couldn't keep up with the orders.

Bryan's wines have steadily improved to the point that today he is one of the finest winemakers in California. This amazing Pinot Noir is a testament to that. The complexity of flavors mixed with the unique soil presents a powerful expression of the grape and a welcome accompaniment to tenderloin of venison or roast duck.
