Rollin and Corby Soles came to Oregon's Willamette Valley nearly 40 years ago with one mission in mind-to make world class Pinot Noir in this promising, but still unproven land. They weren't alone. A few pioneers preceded them by 10 years and after battling Mother Nature one vintage after another, they were making some headway.

However, an odd twist slowed their Pinot Noir quest. After planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they decided to try a sparkling wine and became the first in Oregon to do so. After all, they reasoned, the finest Champagnes in the world hail from these two grapes.

Being the first in anything will always last. And, in this case it certainly has. They made such a splash with their sparkling wine that the world was now eager for their Pinot Noirs. They did not disappoint. Rollin was a master at picking sites to grow Pinot Noir and it shows in the masterful efforts he has put forth. Our selection is a prime example.

Gravel Road refers to the extensive layers of rocks in the vineyard. Only Pinot Noir can exist there. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in small, chilled containers to allow maximum extraction. When completed, the wine spends 18 months in French oak barrels for further complexity and breed. The result is a spicy blend of flavors smacked with wild cherry and rhubarb in perfect harmony to envelop quail stuffed with wild mushrooms and dried cranberries.
