Vetriccie, named after a local plant, is yet another outstanding wine from the tiny island of Corsica, which is off the Italian coast, but a part of France. The vineyards were founded by David Marcelo in 1966 and is still run by his family. Daniel made wine in several countries including the United States and was one of the first to plant grapes in New Mexico.
It was there that he met his future wife and came back to his birthplace to make incomparable wines. Despite its name, Corsica is nothing short of a beautiful paradise. It is comprised mostly of a mountainous terrain with stunning vistas of the Mediterranean almost from any spot on the island.
The vineyards are South facing which allows them to absorb ample sunlight, a critical element in ripening. Corsica has swapped ownership between Italy and France until it appears to be French for good.
It would be hard to tell as it is closer to Italy, has a climate and topography more like Italy and most of the grapes grown here are mainly Italian. In this case the grape is called Neillucciu, also known as Sangiovese in Chianti and Sciaccarellu, which is more commonly known as Mamolo, another Tuscan grape also used in in Chianti.
Small amounts of Grenache and Merlot round out a lovely blend featuring floral and cherry blossom elements with touches of cranberry and currants. This is a universal selection as it can complement all comers from fish to fowl, salads and shellfish.
