So, we're sitting around tasting this incredible Rose, wondering who Fritz is. The importer smiles and says, "Oh, that's his first name. His last name is Hasselbach. But you probably know his estate, Gunderloch." Uh, you mean the Gunderloch that makes the greatest Riesling in the Rheinhessen as well as the one of the greatest in the world - and has for centuries? Uh, yes, THAT Gunderloch.

It has been known since the time of Charlemagne that the vineyards of the Rheingau in Germany are among the greatest in the world. Just below the Rheingau is the Rheinhessen, that was always thought to be good, but not as great as the Rheingau. Then along comes Carl Gunderloch in 1890, and he didn't just upset the apple cart, he reinvented the whole orchard - or, vineyard.

Carl literally changed the entire game of Riesling in Germany. His wines were so good that years later, the press was honoring his offerings with perfect scores in their publications. Nobody even comes close, especially in Rheinhessen.

The interesting thing, here, is that once you know the pedigree of a wine, you look at it quite differently. In this case, we now expect it to be great. Anything less would be a disappointment.

Obviously, we weren't disappointed. Made from 85% Portugieser and 15% Pinot Meunier, this rare beauty satisfies at every level. From the lovely pink hue to the elegant apple and rose petal aroma, to the soft, generous feel in the mouth, it's nothing less than we'd expect from a great winemaker.
