La Moussiere is an estate at the eastern edge of the Loire Valley in Sancerre. It is owned by the Mellot family, who have been growing grapes here since the 16th century. You could say they have it pretty well figured out at this point.
Sancerre is known for great Sauvignon Blanc, some of the best in the world. But one of the best kept secrets here is that Sancerre makes one of the greatest Pinot Noirs on Earth - and a very small amount of equally great Rose.
The Mellot family have a great history and tradition to hold up, and they take that responsibility very seriously. Their vineyards are meticulously manicured with every vine attended to like it is the only one in the vineyard. This takes time and patience, of course, but the reward is producing wines of the caliber of this amazing Rose.
This part of the vineyard has very little soil, mostly rocks, so the vines have to struggle to find water. During their journey deep into the soil, they absorb essential minerals, which enhance the fruit of the vine. Once the Pinot Noir grapes are picked, they're quickly, but gently, crushed. The juice is exposed to a few hours of skin contact instead of weeks, to extract just the barest hint of color before being separated. The result is a heavier than average Rose, because of the majesty of Pinot Noir. Yet it beautifully encapsulates the grape's lovely plum and cherry blossom fruit flavors.
