Erik Allen, owner and winemaker of Ascension Cellars, grew up with food and wine. His uncle was an executive chef and loved pairing wines with his creations. Erik was the beneficiary of those pairings.

His passion for wine lead him to a group of home winemakers and once in, well, you've heard this story before. His love of Syrah lead him to Paso Robles where he met Steve Cass of Cass winery and a bond was formed that has lasted for decades and doesn't show any signs of dissipating.

It's pretty much a tenant in business that competition is good for everybody. It causes you to keep focused and strive to do better. But, competition can also become cutthroat and get very unpleasant. That's why we have lawyers. While there have been skirmishes in the wine business, there is a spirit of cooperation that extends beyond the concrete walls.

And so, it was with Erik. Several winemakers were more than willing to share information, equipment and advice even though he was a potential competitor. They became friends because they shared a similar passion that broke down many of the walls that separate competitors.

Obviously, Syrah was going to be in the portfolio as well as other Rhone varietals like Mourvedre and Grenache, all of which happen to be in our blend. The freshness of this wine is stunning. It's like you just picked the rose, the cherry and the grapefruit and squeezed them into your glass. Bring on the mussels.
