It's difficult to imagine the Dalle Family founding their winery in 1942 during World War II. They were heading south to avoid the conflict and settled in Costieres de Nimes, which is just east of the Rhone Valley. They took a chance settling there as they had no idea of what their fate would be as far as the war. Add to that scenario the fact that Costieres de Nimes had almost no recognition as a fine wine producing area. As it turned out, both issues worked in their favor.
The area is known for the rounded pebbles which dot the landscape, the result of thousands of years of the Rhone River overflowing and depositing them when the waters receded. It is ideal for growing grapes.
The blend is 80% Syrah and 20% Vermentino. Normally we would be suspicious of a rose that uses white grapes, but it is a relatively new concept that works incredibly well. They don't add the white Vermentino wine to the Syrah wine. They ferment them together. The result is that the intense color of the Syrah takes over the white Vermentino and literally turns it red. The Vermentino adds its seductive layers of flavors as the wine is left on the skins for a few hours to attain the blush color and then removed. It's pure genius.
The result is a wine sporting the strength of Syrah with the aromatics of Vermentino. Here is a beauty that would shine with anything from a garlic infused roast chicken to sea bass stuffed with spinach and garlic.
