The Surville family has owned Chateau de Valcombe since 1740. It is quite interesting to note that the 1855 classified growth system for Bordeaux was announced at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris. Bordeaux was the talk of the fair, yet the wine competition revealed a prize for none other than Chateau de Valcombe, quite an honor in such exalted company. In 1873 they were again delighted to be awarded during the same fair in Vienna.

At the end of the Second World War, and before Louis De Surville's death, he bestowed the estate to his nephew, Charles Ricome, who became the first winegrower in the region to plant Syrah vines. Ricome had knowledge and a clear vision to create higher quality wines by planting quality grape varieties that produce less juice. In 1979, Dominique and his wife, Benedicte Ricome, took over from his father, Charles. They continued the pursuit of high-quality wines, the majority of which were Syrah. Their wines are now available to more than 15 countries.

Valcombe is one of the founders of the AOP Costieres de Nimes appellation and occupies an important place among winegrowers of the region. It is known as one of the finest regions for rose in the world although France's wine output is 70% red. The blend here is 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. With nearly three centuries of history, it is safe to assume that they will continue producing award winning wines. As our selection shows, this is a classic rose featuring all the ripe, red fruits, luscious exotic and tropical nuances and a lilting presence. It would pair excellent with an albacore tuna salad or crab cocktail.
