Lelievre was founded by Jean Lelievre in 1971 when he decided it was time to vinify the grapes he had grown from the family-held vineyard in a subsection of Burgundy, France. It is now operated by his sons, Vincent and David. Wine aficionados get excited when you mention Burgundy because many feel it is the best wine in the world. However, all the great wines from Burgundy are made in the Cote d'Or, a small strip of vineyards covering roughly 60 miles. That strip consists of two appellations that are each about 30 miles long and together only account for roughly 30% of Burgundy.

We love discovering wines from other parts of Burgundy, which is why we chose this exciting wine from Lelievre. It is produced in the Cotes de Toul region, just a few miles from the Cote d'Or. Grapes were first planted here by the Romans 2,500 years ago and wine has been made here ever since.

The Lelievre's grow the classic red grapes of Burgundy; Pinot Noir, Gamay and Auxerrois. The last one is a curious grape that is almost non-existent today but plays an important role in their wines. Our blend is 70% Gamay and 30% Pinot Noir. The two make a lovely couple as the Gamay provides the luscious fruit and the Pinot Noir the backbone and finish.

The elusive nose sports cherry blossom, rose petals, and mint; all factors that show up on the palate as well. The integrated flavors would do great service to a tuna tartare or crab and mango salad.
