We are pleased to feature another superb selection from the great, globe-trotting and completely disarming wine sleuth, Mary Taylor. Mary has done things most people would have thought impossible. She has toured the world's great wine regions in search of great wines that the world never knew existed - and she found them! And the world's wine fans are thrilled that she did.
Saint-Pourcain is literally in the middle of France. At one time, some 2,000 years ago, it was a very important area for the Romans and its wines were highly prized. Though the region never really lost favor, other areas became so famous that Saint-Pourcain was hardly mentioned. In other words, it was a perfect place for Mary.
Here, she found Silvain Miniot, a dedicated vintner who for the past 30 years has spearheaded a drive in Saint-Pourcain to improve grape quality and, in so doing, has improved the local wines as well. His efforts are the main reason that Saint-Pourcain was granted appellation d'origine controlee (A.O.C.) status in 2009.
Our selection is 100% Gamay. It is vinified very carefully and expensively, by keeping the finished wine resting on its lees. These are the fine bits of skin, seeds and stems which produce an electrolysis-like effect, protecting the wine from oxidation. Exactly how it works is still a bit of a mystery, but it works!
The result is a larger, bolder Rose with ripe cherry and apricot flavors flanked with cherry soda, pink grapefruit and lemon zest. It's all held in perfect suspension by the piquant, yet persistent finish.
