The strings that attach many of the properties in Bordeaux can be quite fascinating. In the case of August, it is even more fascinating. This is partly because one of the winemakers is Hubert Bouard who also works at the great Grand Crus of St, Emilion, Ch. Angelus.
Chateau August is in the Entre Deux Mers region of Bordeaux. This is a large appellation where most of the great values are born. But it is also where most of the rose originates, a rare wine here when you consider that barely 2% of all the wine in Bordeaux is made into rose.
Co-winemaker, Damien Landour, has crafted over 20 vintages of Chateau Auguste rose as well as three other Chateaux in Bordeaux under the same management.
Chateau Auguste is a 180 acre estate composed primarily of Merlot vines with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes have been converted to wine here for nearly 2,500 years. A healthy history indeed.
Our selection is composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape blends vary greatly in Bordeaux wines, depending on the estate's location, the steepness of the vineyard as well as the components in the soil. Merlot reigns supreme here, but the other two contribute quiet a lot.
Here is a vibrant, racy offering with piquant, almost tropical fruit notes, engaging minerality and a lovely, persistent finish that lasts quite a while.
