Our Sonoroso is a lovely offering from one of Italy's finest wine areas, Trentino. It is located in the Northeast about as far as you can get without crossing into Austria. While it is known for the fine Pinot Grigio's it produces, the most planted grape here is Chardonnay.
We don't see a lot of Trentino Chardonnay here for one very good reason. The Italians drink most of it. The geological occurrences that created the hills of Trento are exactly what Chardonnay thrives in as well as other varietals grown here like Pinot Bianco and Riesling, which are two other grapes that are in our blend.
Chardonnay originated in France, Riesling in Germany, but Pinot Bianco is a bit of a mystery. The French claim it as being native to Alsace, but since Alsace was once part of Germany, the Germans like to think it's theirs. The Italians have no history of it coming here, so they suspect it's an original, but they're so close to Austria there is skepticism there as well.
Does it really matter? Not really, but sometimes these countries get very personal with their grapes. The main point here is that these grapes complement each other so well, it's hard to understand why this blend isn't done more often.
The Chardonnay delivers the body and presence while the Pinot Bianco delivers a slight earthiness and the Riesling it's telltale acidity. Just let it go with coconut cookies or lemon pound cake.
