Castoro Cellars was founded in 1983 by the husband and wife team of Niels and Bimmer Udsen. Niels was born and raised in Ventura and studied Agribusiness at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, so it wasn't a long journey to their winery in Paso Robles just up the road.
They started making a few barrels of wine at a custom crush facility until they could build their own in 1990. Today the estate has 1,400 acres of vineyards, all of which are certified organic. They hired Tom Myers as winemaker and since then have become one of most heralded wineries in Paso. Italy made the first wine of this type over 100 years ago and today it is one of the most popular wines in the world. It wasn't long before other wineries around the world, like Castoro, got on the bandwagon.
Moscato refers to the Muscat grape, considered to be the first grape made into wine some 8,000 years. It has had a lot of time to mutate into many different versions. There are probably more grapes with Muscat in their title than any other grape known. Our selection is 61% Orange Muscat and 39% Muscat Canelli. They couldn't be more different. Orange Muscat is so named because of the intense aroma and flavor of orange. Canelli is more floral with touches of peach and apricot.
Together they form an exciting amalgam of flavors from those mentioned along with honeysuckle and tangerine. The slight sweetness would be welcome with butter cookies or creme brulee.
