Our selected Riesling hails from Badger Mountain Vineyard, located in Kennewick, Washington, on the southwest bank of the Columbia River. Washington State has been known for Riesling ever since one of its wines bested all others in an international competition nearly 50 years ago. Everybody noticed.

In 1982, Bill Powers founded Badger Mountain Vineyard, and in 1990, it became the first white wine vineyard to be certified organic in Washington State. Also, no sulfites are added to their wines. This can be rather risky as sulfites are a natural inhibitor of bacteria. Winemakers add them judiciously, but to not add them means the wine has to fight off any problems on its own. Is this possible? The answer is "yes" as long as two things are in place; low pH and high acidity. These two factors are definitely in Badger Mountain wines; thus, they do not need the addition of anything else. Winemaker, Jose Mendoza, has been there since 1995, so his knowledge of the vineyard and the grape it delivers is unmatched.

Their commitment to the environment goes beyond organic farming. They use solar energy and biofuels to run the winery and equipment. They also use lightweight glass and recycled paper for their labels. In other words, their commitment is far-reaching and prodigious. We can't be totally sure that all this extra care has an impact on the wine, but we can assure you that the wine is way above the norm.

The fresh, clean properties of our selection are unmistakable. From the layers of apricot and pear to the snappy finish boasting lemon grass and grapefruit, it is a thrill with coconut shrimp or Branzino with a mint sauce.
