John and Harry Mariani, family Proprietors of Banfi Vintners, acquired a mid-18th century winery in 1979 and revitalized it and changed the name to Banfi Piemonte. Here, with the same detailed care of a century ago, their skilled winemakers produce "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG This rare offering is a slightly sweet red sparkling wine cherished by the courts of Europe over two centuries ago, owes its reincarnation to Banfi.
Legend has it that this wine was considered such an elixir that Cleopatra made a toast to Caesar with it. We believe that this is one of those instances where fact is stranger than fiction, but it does solidify Brachetto's distinction. It is one of the few Italian wines anointed with the DOCG designation, meaning that it is not only from a specific place, but is also guaranteed to be of the highest quality. Brachetto must share its fame with its more famous counterpart, Moscato d'Asti, but to us it shines all on its own. It does share Moscato's lightness, low alcohol, slight sweetness, and petillance. However, its flavor profile is quite different.
Even in its low alcohol state, it shows off a rich cranberry and fresh raspberry nuance that is unmistakable. The beauty of the wine is its finish. While the enveloping sweetness is enticing, the clean, tight finale is refreshing and even magnified by the effervescence. Time to break out the tin of biscotti or the seasonal fresh fruit, carrot cake, or rhubarb pie. Of course, you could always enjoy it by itself. Who's to argue?
