Malgra is a large co-op in one of Italy's most famous wine appellations, Piedmont. It is known for two of the greatest red wines in the world, Barolo and Barbaresco. But, it is also famous for its sparkling wine, Asti Spumanti, and two delicious dessert wines made from Moscato and Brachetto.

Our La Sera selection is made from the red Brachetto. It is one of the most exciting dessert wines anywhere. It is said that Cleopatra poured it for Marc Anthony as an elixir. We'll leave it at that. Brachetto is a dark-skinned grape that was responsible for rather coarse and cumbersome wines. It was a producer, Arturo Bersano, who created the light, sparkling version in the 1970s, making it a rather newcomer to the wine trade.

The experiment was an instant hit. It became the red alternative to Moscato, a very popular white that has been produced for centuries. Moscato and Brachetto are obviously very different, but do share a few important features. Both are slightly sweet, low in alcohol and have a beguiling effervescence to them, which the Italians call Frizzante.

Our selection is a classic. The waft of Bing cherries in the nose signals what is to follow. It descends with rich cherry and cherry blossom extracts coating the entire palate and finishes with a slightly tart yet cleansing effect. We consider this an all-encompassing wine. Its light flavors and slight sweetness makes it perfect for cookies and fruit. Just try dipping an almond biscotti in La Sera and you'll get it.
