This is a very special and exciting wine to offer to our members. The last time the Wine of the Month Club was able to do so, it was nearly 40 years ago. To be able to do so now is more than an honor, it is a great thrill.
The Schlink Family have been producing wine in this special place since 1885 and their position here is legendary. It's hard to know where to start the description. First, it is German Riesling. Nothing comes close, red or white. It is on a blessed terrain between the Moselle and Rhine Rivers, where unquestionably the finest wines in the world are born.
Normally, that would be enough, but there's more. There is a hierarchy here and it is strictly adhered to. If the label just says "Riesling," there is no guarantee how good it will be. If it says "Qualitstswein" that means it has a certain degree of quality. If that term is followed by "mit Pradikat" you are even further up the ladder. There are further quality designations within the Pradikat designation, of which Spatlese is in the middle. It's all based on the maturity of the grape and the sugar at harvest. The problem is that Germany's marginal climate often doesn't allow this much time to ripen. So, when it does, it is very special.
The peach and apricot flavors along with the slate and minerals are enthralling. Even with the sweetness, the finish is clean and fresh. It was made for enjoying on its own or with seared scallops in a butter saffron sauce.
