Charlie Barra first planted his vineyard in Mendocino's Redwood Valley in 1955. The 175 acre vineyard is located at the base of rolling hills, located near the Russian River. He was a first generation Italian whose parents came from Piedmont. Their wine history dates back to the mid-1800s when their ancestors worked the famous vineyards of Piedmont.
It wasn't until 1997 that he and his wife, Martha, decided to launch their first Brand BARRA of Mendocino. Three years later, Girasole Vineyards debuted. The Barra family vineyard wines have been farmed organically for fifty years, before there was even an organic certification process. Today, their vineyard spans over 300 acres of organic varietal wine grapes and has five ponds around it. The water used for irrigation and frost protection is all run-off from the pristine watersheds neighboring the vineyards.
The grapes of this Muscat Canelli wine were hand-picked on September 19, 2019, destemmed, and immediately transferred to a tank press. To produce the maximum floral aroma and fruit flavors, the grapes are then put through a prolonged, cold fermentation at 42-48F. Super chilling to halt the fermentation process happens when the sugar and alcohol are perfectly balanced, and once the temperature drops to 30F, the yeast becomes inactive. It is further cold aged for another 90 days to retain its delightful freshness and fruit character. Flavors include candied fruits and sweet vanilla and finishes with swatches of wild apricot, peach nectar, and pear. All this flavor would literally scream for a fruit salad or a spicy lamb tagine.
