Winemaker, Joel Klein, knew a thing or two about making Riesling as he had been the head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michele in Washington before founding Snoqualmie in 1984. Ste. Michele was the Riesling leader in the US and still is.

Chateau Ste. Michele, seeing the potential, purchased Snoqualmie in 1991 and turned it into a completely organic, sustainable winery. It has continued as such to this day.

The winery is named after Snoqualmie Falls, which is 20 miles southeast of Seattle, but the winery is in Patterson, some 150 miles southeast of Snoqualmie. The name has a wonderful and romantic history to it, but the area is too cold and damp to grow grapes.

Patterson is closer to the Columbia Valley and protected from the western chill by the Cascade Mountains, which form the perfect barrier. Pretty much all of Washington's wineries are located around here.

Riesling became the Washington buzz wine when the Los Angeles Times conducted a blind tasting of Rieslings from around the world and Ste. Michele came in first, beating out some very big rivals from Germany. That's all it took.

Regardless, Snoqualmie has always made delicious and distinctive Rieslings and this beauty is no exception. Honey, fig and apricot are the order of the day here with splashes of peach nectar, and lemon zest filling out the rest. Luscious.
