Tenuta Carretta sits on a property that has been known for exceptional wines since the 13th Century. It is located in one of the finest, if not the finest, appellations in Italy, Piedmont. The wines were so exceptional, that in the 15th Century it was decreed that half the production would be given to the Marquis Damiano, the lord of the area.

Carretta produces wines from the Nebbiolo grape in one of the finest areas in Piedmont, Barolo. The Miroglio Family acquired the property in 1985 and added Moscato to the mix as well. While it is the famed Barolo that takes up the conversation on Piedmont, the producers love talking about their Moscato.

This is probably because it is the complete opposite of the large and lovely wines made from the Nebbiolo grape. The Muscat grape is the oldest grape known to man, having been vinified and made into wine over 8,000 years ago. It is thought that every grape, red or white, is a descendent of Muscat. After centuries of mutation and transplantation around the world it slowly changed to adapt to its new climate and soil.

It was only 100 years ago that an Italian producer decided to make a lighter version with a touch of petillance to it and Moscato d'Asti was born. Its lilting flavors combined with its low alcohol made it an instant hit which continues to this day. The first sensation is peach and apricot which charmingly dances on the tongue. Serving with fruit and cookies or Asian cuisine would be divine.
