Kalpela Wines is located In Mendocino County, California, in the village of Calpella. It has been home to many Italian immigrant families, most of which have resided in the community for over 100 years. Kalpela's wines are produced from old-vine vineyards located in the hills and bench lands of Mendocino, overlooking the headwaters of the beautiful Russian River. These wines are vineyard focused, fruit driven, complex, and well-balanced wines, produced and bottled at Kalpela's winery in Redwood Valley. The wines are aged and fermented using a selection of both American and French oak barrels.
With the exception of early rains and frost, 2019 was a normal growing season. It produced a very fragrant wine with the grapes coming from the 9th harvest of Nube Bianco Vineyard in Potter Valley. The hot days, cold nights, and 1000-foot elevation help to produce great acidity and balancing brightness. The grapes were machine harvested, crushed, and then gently pressed to extract the juice without any of the bitterness and tannins from the skins of the grapes. The juice was then cold-settled for two days and racked off the lees before fermenting in stainless steel tanks for 4 weeks. Fermentation was stopped early to produce a low alcohol, slightly sweet wine with bright acidity.
This wine has rich aromas of fresh peaches, freesia and lime zest followed by similar fruity flavors. It is rich and sweet on the palate, with great balanced acidity. Enjoyable as an aperitivo, with prosciutto and almonds paired with firm cow's milk cheeses. It will also pair well with grilled shrimp, seared duck breast, or dishes with herbs.
