The Valentini name has been associated with Umbria for over 100 years. They are located in the DOC of Montefalco where the Sagrantino grape is held in the highest esteem, and for good reason. They have brought the area of Umbria into the limelight so that it can compete with its famous neighbor, Tuscany.

But there is another grape grown here that also has tremendous stature, Trebbiano Spoletino. Spoletino is a clone of Trebbiano that produces lusher flavors and character. It was first isolated in Montefalco and is now given a DOC designation.

Grapes have been grown here for nearly 1,000 years. Its history and fame pre-dates Tuscany, though Tuscany and its most famous appellation, Chianti, still dominates the Italian wine landscape. With offerings like this, that is changing.

Besides being completely organic, the winery uses only natural yeasts, natural fertilizers and no chemical pesticides. They also do not micro filter their wines for fear that they may filter out some of the wine's unique flavors.

The results are the purest expression of the Trebbiano grape. The wine is barreled for six months for aging, to further enhance the bold flavors. And unlike most Trebbiano, Spoletino can improve with several years of bottle age.

The result is a richer, denser profile of flavors from tropical fruit to peach, to guava and a lovely spice component.
