It's difficult to know where to start with Saint Cosme. It is unquestionably one of the super stars of the Cotes du Rhone no matter what your criteria is for judging this amazing property.
The property has been in the Barruol Family since 1570 and continues to produce wine at the top of the charts. Our selection is a perfect example. The Cotes du Rhone appellation is the lowest common denominator in the appellation. Yet in the hands of Saint Cosme, it is a blockbuster.
Most wines in the appellation are made from grapes that weren't good enough to go into Gigondas or Chateauneuf du Pape. Cosme uses only 100% Syrah grown around their vineyards in Gigondas. Most wineries would release a wine like this as their top tier. For Cosme, it's their ground floor.
But that's what you do when you have a history of over 400 years making wines considered benchmarks for the appellation. Add to that the fact that the wine is now 100% organic, 100% vegan and uses only natural yeasts to ferment their grapes and you have a totally natural ecosystem for quality.
Of course, all this attention to detail shows up in the final product. The wine could be confused for a Cote-Rotie or Hermitage. The unmistakable Syrah nose powers through the glass with black currant, dark chocolate and olallieberry filling up the space. It towers at every turn and will require a substantial foil like wild boar sausages or duck confit to show its stuffing.
