Our selection comes to us from H. Mercer Imports and their two superstar sommeliers, Mark Huddleston and Laurent Michit. Mark was born in Los Angeles and gained an incredible interest in and ensuing knowledge of wine at an early age. He worked at some of the top restaurants in L.A. and then went into the wine importing business where he met fellow sommelier, Laurent.
Laurent was born in Burgundy and worked at the most prestigious properties and restaurants there. After visiting many of the finest vineyards in the world, he decided to bond with Huddleston and put together their own wines.
Their powerhouse, Poggio Nibbiale, is in the Maremma appellation along the coast of Tuscany. For centuries Maremma has lived in the shadow of its neighbor, Chianti, until, very curiously, a few Chianti producers decided to make wine here because it seemed like an even better spot than Chianti. And then two unthinkable things happened. They charged more than double for their wines and were actually able to sell them.
This was some 40 years ago and that was when Morellino was born. It is 85% Sangiovese and small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes. It represents easily one of the greatest wine values in the world as it sells for a fraction of those of its neighbors but can rival them. Lovely, perfumed scents emanate from the glass, depositing flecks of plum, anise, and currants along the way. The velvety tannins is more than capable of taming a spicy meatloaf or commanding chili.
