Babich Wines is one of New Zealand's oldest and largest wineries. Founded in 1916 by a Croatian immigrant to the North Island, Babich Wines is still family-owned and operated. As the third generation seeks to continue the family's tradition in winemaking, they have focused their efforts on implementing sustainable and organic practices.

This focus is found at the newer Babich vineyards in Marlborough on the South Island, the New World's preeminent region for Sauvignon Blanc. Chief executive officer David Babich puts his winemaking philosophy this way: whatever we take out of the land we put back into the land. At the Headwaters vineyard, for example, one can find a menagerie of animals among the vines preserving the health and integrity of the land.

This wine is a classic example of Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough drawn from the best of Babich's vineyards. The climate is particularly suited for expressing a fuller, riper, and softer expression of the grape. Maximum sunshine during the day, cool evenings, dry harvest seasons, free-draining soil, and absence of frosts make Marlborough an ideal region for winemaking as it is devoid of the variable weather conditions and frost that are dreaded in France during harvest.

The nose can range from herbaceous and citrusy to notes tropical fruit and peach. However, if you dig a little deeper, additional notes like jalapeno, green pepper, grass, and even some funkier flavors will appear. Marlborough's hospitable harvest conditions help enhance tropical notes while remaining clean and crisp. This wine will complement a variety of cuisines, especially shellfish and vegetarian dishes.
