Due Terre is a certified organic cooperative specializing in indigenous Sicilian grapes like our selected Frappato. It is often blended with another Sicilian original, Nero d'Avola to add extra body, but Due Terre ("Two Lands") wants to preserve the natural state of the grape since it was discovered in 1760.
Sicily is one of the most diverse, multi-cultural places on Earth. Because of its strategic position as the eastern gateway to the Mediterranean, it has been conquered by every civilization that ruled the world at the time. From the Egyptians to the Arabians, Greeks, and Romans, the influences in architecture, food, and wine are still in place as they have been for thousands of years.
Most likely, the greatest influence on their wines came from the Greeks. When they ran the show some 2,500 years ago, they planted grapes as far as they could conquer. Frappato may be one of the presents they left behind.
It stands in contrast to most of the red grapes of Sicily. The mountainous terrain and warm climate signal a place for grand reds, yet Frappato is a delicately scented, lighter offering that is quite refreshing when slightly chilled. Even the labels with pictures of puppets used in the 15th Century signal the fanciful nature of the wine.
The light color signals the easy style of the wine, offering sweet plum and cherry with hints of cranberry and mint. This lovely selection can match anything from a lamb stew to poached salmon with mango salsa.
