Gemtree is a family-owned winery and vineyard established by Melissa and Mike Brown in 1998. They farm and produce organically and biodynamically. Mike is one of the more famous winemakers in Australia. He has been crafting wines of tremendous character and grace for nearly four decades and his wines have been honored far and wide.
Besides making their own wine, the Browns provide a complete wine operation for hire by aspiring winemakers who don't quite have the capital to operate their own. There are many operations like this all over the world and offer a tremendous opportunity for people to get their feet wet in the wine business without falling over.
The grapes are grown in South Australia's McLaren Vale district. It is known worldwide as an area where some of the largest wines in Australia are crafted. Our selection is certainly a proper example. The name Dragon's Blood was obviously chosen for a reason.
When the discussion is about Australia, the topic is usually Shiraz, their synonym for Sirah, the great red of the Northern Rhone. Yet, having tasted Cabernet Sauvignon from here for decades, we believe that grape to be of equal stature. Some of the top rated Cabernets made in the world come from Australia.
Our selection is certainly one of them. It enters with the threat of being overpowering, but then settles down to a lovely, berry driven fruit and a purity of flavors that would welcome an Aussie feast. That could include a charred tri-tip on the barbie with all the trimmings.
