There is probably no one grape variety as closely tied to one country as Shiraz, aka Syrah is tied to Australia. It is grown in every major wine area in the country and accounts for most of its fame and recognition. It was first planted nearly 200 years ago in New South Wales, where Leogate is located.

The winery was founded in the 1960s by Len Evans as part of his holding company. Being enamored of wine, he built a tidy reputation for his production until he retired and sold it to Bill and Vicki Widin in 2007. They have expanded the property to over 200 acres of vineyards and continued to make award-winning wines.

Our Shiraz Blend is a classic Australian original. They have been blending Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon for as long as both have been planted here. How and why they came up with this blend is unknown, but it is strictly Australian. Apparently, though, it continues because it has been successful.

Our selection is almost equal parts of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon at 40% and 36%. It's the remaining 24% Merlot that is surprising. The warm climate here is responsible for the imposing wines produced. So, to soften the edges, the wine matures in French oak for up to a year. This accounts for the velvety texture, spice, and vanilla to match pork hock stewed in garlic and tomato or turkey thigh carnitas.
