The history if Chateau Beaubois is quite unique. It was established by a country doctor, Rene Mouret, who rode his horse to visit his patients and his wife, Margueritte, one of the first women to ever run a winery in France. The present owners, the Boyer Family, have just celebrated their 100th anniversary.

The estate rests in a small appellation of the Languedoc called Costieres de Nimes, though it is so close and similar in climate and soil to the Rhone Valley that it is often referred to as such. These similarities are also reflected in the grapes as our selection is 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 10% Marselan. The Marselan grape is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, developed in France in 1961. As was the case in those times, they were looking for a flavorful, disease resistant grape that could produce quality wine with high yields. They only got two out of the three as it was disease resistant and produced high quality but the yields were lower than expected.

It has been recently resurrected as its main attributes are now more desired than in the past. Chateau Beaubois is not only organic, but also only uses natural yeasts, present on the grape itself, for fermentation. This brings out more of the natural flavors than commercial yeasts.

Those flavors are the bold, earthiness of Syrah along with the black currant and blackberry of the Grenache and the licorice of the Marselan. Together they form a cohesiveness that would rock a roast duck or roll with a venison chop.
