Lunaria was founded in 2005 by a group of vineyard owners who were once part of the Cantina Orsogna, a cooperative in a small town of the same name. Their vineyards are located in the province of Abruzzo, on the Adriatic coast of Italy. Wine had been made from their vineyards for three generations and they decided to band together and form their own cooperative that would be completely organic and biodynamic. Their biodynamic vineyard area measures 360 hectares today.

Conversion to organics by an existing vineyard is much more difficult than starting from scratch. First of all, you must remove any vegetation that has volunteered its unwanted presence in the vineyard. Once removed they must now plant a cover crop which is beneficial to the vines by starving out the unwanted volunteers and consume less water in doing so.

Next comes the building of insect colonies, which not only do no harm to the vines but are natural predators of those which are. This process must be constantly monitored to assure that the good bugs are eradicating the bad ones. When it all works in harmony, you have a perfect scenario.

The Pecorino grape here is one of our favorites. It is a uniquely Italian and delicious varietal named after the famous cheese, Pecorino Romano. The grapes are loved by sheep, the milk from which the cheese is made, so it felt natural to the name grape Pecorino. The floral, and tropical aromas blend seamlessly with acacia, jasmine, roasted almonds and allspice. The finish is electrifying with all that the nose promises continuing from beginning to grand and glorious end.
