Alta Alella is the realization of a dream of the Guillens family headed by Josep and Christina Guillens. Their daughters are also on board having grown up in the wine culture their entire lives. There is no school that can teach the things you learn when you grow up with it. With families like this, it's in your DNA, culture, dreams, past, present, and future.
Xarel-lo is the principle white grape of Catalonia located on the Northeastern seaboard of Spain and is home to one of its most famous cities, Barcelona. The Catalonians are an enigmatic sort. They have their own version of Spanish and many would like to secede from Spain all together.
Barcelona is considered one of the gastronomic capitals of Spain. When this kind of praise is heaped on an area, the wines have a responsibility to follow suit. Fortunately, the wines from here do so exceptionally well.
There are no rules here for what you can plant and where like there is in the Rioja, so you will find many grapes from different countries as well as their own. Xarel-lo is one of them. It accounts for most of the whites made here and for good reason. It is a powerful, thick-skinned grape that could be called a white wine for red wine lovers. The thick skins give Xarel-lo a slightly clinging mouth feel which shows off the peach and spice essences. The finish is very clean and tart, begging for a plate of raw oysters or a classic paella.
