Bernard Duseigneur took over for his father managing the family estate in 2002. He would be the Fifth Generation to do so. He had been a successful investment banker, but his upbringing was in the vineyard and winery. So, it was not much of a culture shock to give up the suit and tie for rubber boots and an apron.

Duseigneur is located on the right bank of the Rhone River, just across from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the most famous wine in the Southern Rhone. The soil here is almost identical to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with round Quartzite pebbles dominating the soil. They serve two purposes. First, they retain water that is released over time to nourish the vines. They also provide drainage so that roots continue to seek water further down into the soil. This makes the roots stronger and more resistant to disease and passes them to the vines above the ground making them stronger and more resistant as well. It also makes organic farming easier to manage.

The estate has been organic since it was planted in 1967, never using any chemicals. Bernard obtained a biodynamic certification with the desire to better understand the environment in which to produce quality wines. This is what accounts for the vibrant flavors and essences in this blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. The unmistakable nose is redolent with cranberry and spice, giving way to dense earth and wild plum. The experience is almost too much on its own, but could be tamed with a slow roasted pork leg seasoned with garlic and rosemary.
